When it comes to fitness, people seem to have an all or nothing approach; either you go to the gym excessively or you don’t go at all, or you either eat amazingly healthy each day or you eat shit…

Where did this come from?

If you want to get in to shape you don’t have to dedicate your whole life and soul to it… all you have to do is something which will make you fitter and healthier than you were before.

Here is a typical situation:

Joe Bloggs is quite an unhealthy, overweight guy who would love to be able to go out and run for an hour without collapsing half-way through.
However, Joe Bloggs is extremely busy; he works a 40 hour week and has 3 wonderful kids who he has to look after.
Joe thinks that because he doesn’t have the time to run 5 days a week there is no point trying at all, and so chucks that idea of getting into shape to the back of his mind and continues being unhappy with his body.

But..

On a Wednesday evening Joe drops his kids off at karate, and normally just sits for an hour in the seating area watching Sky Go.
Now, in this time Joe could go for a 5 minute walk (episodes are normally 40 minutes long anyway), but Joe still doesn’t do this because he thinks it’s pointless; 5 minutes is not enough to make a difference, right?

NO.

When it comes to fitness, every little helps. 5 minutes of walking each week is 3 hours of exercise a year more than you would have done previously.
This may still seem miniscule, but when this accumulates over a few years it can make a huge difference.

Fitness is all about long-term consistency; why go all out and fail when you can just take it slow and make steady and consistent progression?

Another important point is the change in your mentality; making a conscious effort to go out and do some exercise does wonders to your mindset.
When Joe goes out for this walk, he feels good because he did something that will make him healthier. As a result he subconsciously becomes a bit more aware of what he eats, and puts slightly less on his plate. After a few weeks he notices that when he is playing with his kids he does not get tired as quickly, and work collegues are starting to give him complements!

Joe is now embracing his walks; he actaully wants to go on them – heck sometimes he actaully feels like running!

This is the sort of progression that can happen to you. Your body will thank you for every good thing you do to it; I’m not saying this is going to make you look like Thor, but it will definitely  lead to you being that little bit prouder about yourself.

So what are you waiting for!? The park is just round the corner!

The Key To Staying Disciplined In The Gym

nature-sky-sunset-man

Building muscle is like climbing a mountain:

The people who fail try and run straight up the cliff face, then inevitably trip up, and fall back down the mountain.
The people who are successful take their time and walk the path around the mountain, making slow, consistent steps but progressing every day.

Consistency is the key to building muscle; you cannot gain 40lbs of muscle in a ‘4 week ultra-gain muscle program’ – we can normally only build 1-2lbs of lean muscle a month.
So the only way to ensure we are getting bigger and stronger is to get in that gym consistently and work out effectively.

But so many people simply cannot stay disciplined, and therefore do not make the progress they crave.

“So Mike, how do I stay disciplined in the gym?“

You have to enjoy it.

I love going to the gym – every day that is the one thing I always look forward to. Going to the gym is not a burden for me; it’s something I am buzzing to do…

“But Mike – how do I enjoy going to the gym?”

Personally, I need to know that I am progressing – The way I structure my workouts has allowed me to see myself making small, progressive gains in almost every workout – knowing you are progressing is the best feeling ever. This is also why I am so excited and look forward to going to the gym every day. I know I am achieving something.

For example, a few weeks ago I hit 90kg (200lbs) for 6 reps on the bench press. The next time I hit 90kg I did 7 reps. THAT FELT SO GOOD.

Trust me, as soon as you start realizing you’re making progress and getting somewhere, you will not want to stop.

So get yourself on a workout program which helps you see yourself progress, and get one step closer to your goal than you were yesterday.

How To Achieve Your Goals

weight loss exercise

A lot of you out there have goals and aspirations which you want to achieve, but you just can’t be bothered to do it.

For years I have wanted to help others get into fitness and help them develop their bodies and minds… but I was just too lazy and made excuses.

How do we stop this and start being productive?

Well, what we need to do is start developing positive habits.
Habits are basically your brain’s ‘default’ mode; they are the things you just do without even realising.

Your brain acts similar to your body – the more you practise something the easier it gets.
Therefore the way to start doing positive things is to practice at them.

Unfortunately, developing positive habits takes a tonne of willpower… and we have a limited amount… great…

So how do I develop these habits successfully?

I am not an advocate for going cold-turkey; it always results in me rebounding. My logical answer as to why is because going cold turkey requires a lot of willpower for a significant amount of time before it becomes a habit – a lot of us will not be able to handle this and will give up before reaching the ‘habit’ stage.

Going cold turkey also often leaves us feeling resentful too; suddenly giving up things which have been mentally ingrained in you for so long is pretty hard to give up.

Of course I’m not saying it’s impossible; many people quit smoking and drinking in this manner. However I have found that when it comes to fitness and building new habits, the people who decide to start eating healthy, stop eating junk food, and start exercising everyday are the ones who fail.

Instead, taking things slowly and steadily requires only a little bit of willpower each time, allowing you to stay consistent. Also, constantly achieving little goals feel really good, which will help motivate you to stay on track.

So instead of trying to reduce your calories by 1000 instantly, try and eat one less bit of that croissant you buy each morning, or put half a teaspoon less of sugar in your coffee – you can easily do that.

Before you know it you will be achieving your goals without it feeling like a burden, and you will learn to love the process.

So what are you waiting for? Bin that last bit of that donut and start making some progress!
